organizing\u00a0the trail running event &#8220;Run the Rocks!&#8221;\u2014including a family walk\u2014at Vasquez Rocks County Park 10700 Escondido Canyon Rd, Agua Dulce 91350, on Sunday April 30<sup>th<\/sup> 2017, with races beginning at 9am.\u00a0 The event opens at 8:00 am and includes both a 5k and 10k race through the park which are part of Trail Runner Magazine\u2019s Trophy Series, offering $100 for 1<sup>st<\/sup> place in both events, sponsored by Sweet and Sour Bliss Co. of Acton, CA.\u00a0 Other races include the 20k Relay for Jack event for teams of up to 4 runners, and Jack&#8217;s Cup\u00a01k race at 10:30am.\u00a0 The family 5k walk is untimed with a less challenging course than the 5k loop or the 10k race in the Canyon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jacksangelsfoundation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/100_0241.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3229 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/jacksangelsfoundation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/100_0241-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u201cBrain cancer is the leading cause of death in children with cancer,\u201d states Janet Demeter, president of Jack\u2019s Angels in Agua Dulce, CA, candidly, \u201cand has remained one of the least-funded areas of cancer research for decades.\u201d\u00a0 The result, she maintains, is that the families of those affected by the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> most prevalent variety, DIPG, and the deadliest, must be resigned to witness the death of their child because the relative numbers of the annual population of children with the disease (200-400 in the US) don\u2019t warrant the research investment in our current medical research system.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a lot to swallow,\u201d says Demeter, \u201con top of a terminal prognosis.\u201d\u00a0 She speaks from experience, losing her 3-year-old son Jack to diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma in 2012, and is motivated in her work with Jack\u2019s Angels to change this experience, hopefully, for others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jacksangelsfoundation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/superheroesagainstDIPG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4472\" src=\"https:\/\/jacksangelsfoundation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/superheroesagainstDIPG-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jacksangelsfoundation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/superheroesagainstDIPG-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jacksangelsfoundation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/superheroesagainstDIPG-318x318.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>\u201cRun the Rocks!\u201d celebrates the fact that the actions of real people can make a difference for children with the deadliest pediatric cancers.\u00a0 \u201cIt is due to the fundraising activity of parent-initiated groups that there is any research funding at all for DIPG, and awareness for the disease.\u201d\u00a0 Congressman Steve Knight (R-CA-25) worked with Jack\u2019s Angels in crafting the only bill to ask that children and high-mortality rate cancers be prioritized for research, H.Res.69 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hres69.org\">www.hres69.org<\/a>)\u00a0 It&#8217;s original introduction in January of 2016 has inspired a movement for State Proclamations nationwide, all naming May 17 as DIPG Awareness Day.\u00a0 A research project for DIPG at the Children\u2019s Cancer Therapy Development Institute in Beaverton, OR, Dr. Charles Keller, Scientific Director, is the primary beneficiary of event proceeds.<\/p>\n<p>The event website, www.runtherocks.info, contains registration and volunteer information
